Animate a Minecraft Model: Keyframes for Beginners

Animation looks like a specialist skill. The mechanics are small: you record a pose at a moment, then another, and the software fills the middle.

Bones first

Cubes cannot be animated — bones can. A bone is a pivot with children. Before animating anything, group the parts that move together and put each bone's pivot where the joint really is: a shoulder at the shoulder, not at the centre of the arm. Centring a pivot on the whole limb is the single most common reason an arm swings like a plank.

A keyframe is a pose plus a time

Move the playhead, rotate a bone, and a keyframe appears on that bone's row. Move the playhead further, rotate it back, keyframe again. That is a swing. Everything else is repetition and taste.

Loop by making the ends match

For a cycle, the last pose must equal the first, or the animation jumps. The simplest way: build the first half, then copy the opening keyframes to the end. Our editor has paste mirrored, which flips a pose across X and swaps left/right bone names — half a walk cycle becomes the whole one.

Interpolation is the feel

Linear is mechanical: constant speed, dead stops. Smooth eases in and out and reads as weight. Step snaps between poses, which is right for anything that should look robotic. Right-click a keyframe to change it.

Test at the speed it will run

Preview the loop and watch the extremes, not the middle. If the pose at the top of the swing is wrong, the whole cycle looks wrong however clean the interpolation is.

The timeline, the graph editor and mirrored paste are all in the free browser editor.
